In the month of Rajab in the year 932 (13 April – 12 May 1526), going to the Battle of Mohács, Sultan Suleyman Khan said:
– It would be unthinkable to move forward and leave behind this town of Varadin unconquered.

The town of Varadin lies on the banks of the Danube River; its citadel is hexagonal and located on a high hill that rises to the sky. It is solid like Shaddad, inaccessible, and a really old town. Hungarian historians wrote that it was built during the time of Alexander the Great (Iskender-i Rūmī). The town has seven grand towers; all the bastions were built coordinately. On the ... side of the town, there is a gate. Within the fortress, there are only two hundred houses with clapboard roofs, without fences and gardens. There are also Suleyman Khan Mosque, ammunition storage, and granaries... The town moat, however,... On the southeast side, there are only hills with vineyards. Since the danger threatens from the side of the town where the vineyards are located, that side is strongly fortified with a rampart thirty feet thick and a large deep moat built of slate stone (kesme kaya), so that the town can not be mined or undermined on that side at all. The town has … steps in length.
