Following hot Summer of 2024

The E-ROUTES is back with another newsletter, which covers the last six months from our previous March 2024 issue. Again we are presenting a lot of exciting information about the project and its activities. We present news about the residential stays of our artists-in-residence program for six contemporary European artists selected through the Open Call for the E-ROUTES In-Residency Program, information about the
E-ROUTES presentation at the ICARUS Convention #32 held in Novi Sad in June 2024, new posts on our blog for travel route stories, updates regarding the creation of our travel route stories digital collection and its ingestion into the Europeana digital library, as well as our plans for the following months.

What's new?

Between April and June 2024 four resident-artists of our in-residence program, conducted their planed one-month stays in Italy and Serbia. Nikola Popović and Hertha Miessner were guests of MUSA in Naples and Portici (April-May), where they experienced and discovered Naples and its surroundings, working on textual and visual works of art that will enrich E-ROUTES travel route stories. In June Anja Bohnhof (Belgrade) and Christoph Hasse (Belgrade and Čačak) were guests of BDS, having their first-hand experience of the country's culture and history, which was fruitful background for their work as visual artists. Their works-of-art will also contribute to the new artistic material regarding modern travel experiences. Later this year two remaining artists, Radmila Marčić and Kristina Pongrac will be guests of ICARUS in Croatia.

ICARUS Convention #32 was held in Novi Sad between 5 and 7 June 2024. The Archives of Vojvodina, in cooperation with the Historical Archives of the city of Novi Sad, hosted the 32nd regular convention of the International Center for Archival Research (ICARUS) and this was an opportunity for the E-ROUTES team to present the project. On Thursday, June 6, 2024, in the Historical Archive of the city of Novi Sad, Olivera Krivošić and Sonja Ivanović from the Matica Srpska Library, presented the project, in which the Matica Srpska Library participates together with the Serbian Library Association.

E-ROUTES website blog section was active for past months, as four new travel route stories were published between April and September 2024. The following exciting stories and beautiful accompanying images that were submitted by contemporary artists and cultural heritage professionals are available in English and Serbian: Shiva’s Dance in Montagnola by Saša Ilić, An Evening Before the Opera by Nikola Popović, Unintrusive mountain beauty – Nature Park Golija by Dejan Zagorac, and Traces of Anna Karenina’s Colonel by Zoran Stevanović and Siniša Golubović.

The project team and our associated partners have worked hard in the previous months to finalize the digital collection completion and preparation for its ingestion into the Europeana digital library. This important project's activity and task is near its finish and we will publish a separate news regarding this deliverable. In connection with this is also our planned dedicated web application which will allow usage of new travel route materials and stories created within the E-ROUTES project. We have started development of the application and it will be a very exciting task for us. So, stay tuned!

We share information about the opening of the exhibition "Air Water Earth Fire" by the artist Adriana Pignatelli Mangoni, which opened in Sofia on 5 September 2024 at the Italian Embassy in Bulgaria, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia. This exhibition tells a story through images of the volcanic heritage in Italy, that goes far back in time. The project benefits from the curatorial contribution of the E-ROUTES project partner Museum Center of Agricultural Sciences (MUSA) at the University of Naples Federico II. Within the E-ROUTES projects activities, the gouaches by Adriana Pignatelli Mangoni will be included in the dedicated project’s application, as well as ingested into the Europeana digital library, thus enriching the European travel route cultural landscape.

ICARUS Convention#33 will be organized in Portici (Naples), 16-18 October 2024, with the main theme "European Travel Routes through GLAM. The Challenge of Becoming Digital". E-ROUTES team members will be present and will also deliver a presentation regarding useful
technologies that are valuable as support to the GLAM sector. We will compare the potentials of two software solutions for storytelling.

Unintrusive mountain beauty – Nature Park Golija

The E-ROUTES project continues publication of great stories on its blog, about incredible places which can be described as unique blends of natural, historical and cultural heritage at one place. This time we have an excellent blog post about the Nature Park Golija, provided by Dejan Zagorac. Read more about this beautiful part of Serbia, which is not on the main corridors but offers preserved natural heritage and historical monuments, in combination with unique gastronomy and hospitality.

“What once seemed to be the shortage and with a lot of cynicism called a backward area, in new circumstances of the overall global environmental crisis and the search for authentic values, uncorrupted people and preserved nature, even a refuge from global pandemics, is a value and an advantage today that is more and more rare and is highly rated. Today Golija is a real unintrusive gem.
Golija offers its visitors clear streams and pastures, beautiful views from Jankov kamen (Janko’s Rock) to the whole mountainous Serbia, old villages of Old Vlach and the most hospitable householders ready to serve an unexpected guest everything they have , both dried and cooked, to toast with “Golija’s third”, to taste freshly picked raspberries or potatoes just pulled out.
As UNESCO program says, biosphere reserves are for both people and nature. The essence of sustainable development is in finding the right balance and finding balance from the complete use of natural resources to coexistence and exchange between man and nature.
Fortunately, such balance can still be found on Golija and with the help and support of the competent state authorities, ministries, inspections and always important civil society and international projects, the vision of the development of Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve that would serve as examples for the development of other area and which people would visit in order to learn from a concrete example what sustainable development should mean, is achievable.”
